Gas conference: Activists abseiled down from WU
On Monday morning, activists from "Debt for Climate" (D4C) and "Extinction Rebellion" (XR) rappelled down from the WU library building in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district to demonstrate against the European Gas Conference (EGC). However, the conference was postponed in advance due to security concerns.
During their action, the activists unveiled a large banner with the inscription "Stop fossil crimes". "The fact that the conference has been postponed is a first success for the resistance from civil society - but the dirty practices of the gas lobby and thus the reasons for our protest remain unchanged," explained Niklas Niskate from Extinction Rebellion in a press release.
Stop the expansion of gas infrastructure
The international alliance with "Debt for Climate" is demanding, among other things, a halt to the expansion of gas infrastructure.
Second demo planned
The three-day gas conference was originally planned to start on Tuesday. Despite the postponement, another demonstration is to take place on Wednesday at 5 pm.
Major protest last year
The planned protest actions are said to have been the reason for the postponement of the conference. Last year, numerous demonstrators marched through Vienna's city center because of the gas conference. There was a confrontation with the police, who used pepper spray and batons and temporarily arrested 165 people.
