Automatically saved draft
Following the fan attacks on players in the Turkish soccer league, twelve people have been arrested so far. Among them is a fan who threw an object at the head of the Fenerbahce coach, wrote Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya on Monday on X. Trabzonspor coach Abdullah Avci said after the incidents: "We are experiencing a time in which Turkish soccer is completely in chaos, in which tensions are constantly high and in which we cannot use the healing power of soccer."
Supporters of Trabzonspor had stormed the pitch on Sunday after the 2:3 against the club from Istanbul and attacked the opponent's players and coach. Pictures show violent confrontations. Fans attacked Fenerbahce players with punches and kicks.
FIFA President Infantino: "Absolutely unacceptable"
The Turkish Football Association has announced an investigation into the incident and criminal sanctions. FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the fan attacks as "absolutely unacceptable" in an Instagram post and called for penalties. Fenerbahce's team flew back to Istanbul on a private plane on Sunday night.
Turkish soccer has only recently made negative headlines with incidents of violence. Last year, referee Halil Umut Meler was attacked after a match, including by the then president of Ankaragücü, Faruk Koca. Meler now also officiated the match in Trabzon.
