Manchester United defeated Liverpool in the English FA Cup quarter-finals after extra time. Amad Diallo scored the decisive goal for the home side in the 121st minute of the spectacular 4:3 win at Old Trafford on Sunday. Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp must therefore write off the first of four possible titles in his farewell season. Chelsea had previously made it to the semi-finals thanks to a 4-2 win over second-division side Leicester City.
Liverpool were behind after an early goal from Scott McTominay (10'), but managed to turn things around in the final minutes of the first half thanks to Alexis Mac Allister (44') and Mohamed Salah (45+2). Antony equalized for the Red Devils shortly before the end (87'). United were closer to a third goal in extra time, but Liverpool scored: a deflected shot from Harvey Elliott ended up in the net (105').
United with the double comeback
But the team of criticized coach Erik ten Hag struck back again. Marcus Rashford scored to make it 3:3 (112') before Diallo's shot just before the end drew cheers from the home fans. The goalscorer was sent off with a yellow card after his celebration.
We played brilliantly, but couldn't decide the game early," said Klopp. Liverpool have already won the League Cup this year. In addition to the league title, Klopp can also lead his team to triumph in the Europa League.
Chelsea also avoided extra time late on against Leicester. Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke scored in the 92nd and 98th minutes respectively to lift the Blues. Marc Cucurella (13) and Cole Palmer (45-1) had previously given the Londoners a seemingly reassuring 2-0 lead at the break. However, Leicester, who are on course for promotion, managed to pull a goal back through a curious own goal from Axel Disasi (51'), before Stephy Malvididi (62') equalized for the underdogs. However, Chelsea scored a late winner against the visitors, who were decimated after being sent off.
Manchester City had already beaten Newcastle United 2-0 in the quarter-finals on Saturday. Second division side Coventry City won 3:2 at Premier League club Wolverhampton. In the semi-finals (April 20/21) at Wembley Stadium, City will face Chelsea and United will play Coventry.
