ÖFB U17s narrowly miss out on European Championship qualification
Austria's U17 national soccer team has missed out on qualifying for the Women's European Championship finals in Sweden in May!
A 3-0 win over Hungary in Omis on Thursday in the last match of the elite round was not enough, as Belgium celebrated a 1-0 last-minute win over mini-tournament hosts Croatia in the parallel match and finished first in Group A3, tied on points with the ÖFB team due to the direct comparison. The Austrians had lost 3:2 to the Belgians after a 2:0 victory over Croatia in the opening match.
"The team is devastated!"
"The whole team is devastated. We did everything we could for our game and knew that we had to rely on the outcome of the parallel game and hope. The fact that the decisive goal was scored in the 90th minute is emblematic of the course of the elite round, in which luck was not on our side on one or two occasions," said ÖFB team manager Patrick Haidbauer.
