Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has announced the squad for the upcoming international matches against France and the Netherlands. There are some new players in the DFB squad, while other familiar names are surprisingly absent.

German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann is starting the European Championship year with a radically changed national team. Exactly three months before the opening match against Scotland in Munich on June 14, the DFB head coach nominated six newcomers for the test matches against France and the Netherlands in Frankfurt on Thursday. At the same time, the 36-year-old is without prominent players such as Mats Hummels, Niklas Süle, Leon Goretzka and goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

Here is the Nagelsmann squad:

Three new Stuttgart players
In addition to the prominent returnees Manuel Neuer and Toni Kroos, the 26-man squad includes the three Stuttgart players Waldemar Anton, Maximilian Mittelstädt and Deniz Undav, the Munich youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic, Jan-Niklas Beste from 1. FC Heidenheim and Maximilian Beier from Hoffenheim. The seventh professional without an international appearance is Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann, who has been part of the DFB elite squad several times.

Nagelsmann's radical change at the start of the tournament year is also a reaction to the sobering defeats last November against European Championship participants Turkey (2:3) and Austria (0:2). "We wanted to see some players with a different profile. The door is not closed to anyone," said the team boss. The big loser of the nomination is Borussia Dortmund, who only have one player left in the squad, attacker Niclas Füllkrug. The winner is the in-form VfB Stuttgart with four professionals. The squad is led by captain Ilkay Gündogan.

FC Bayern will be without attacker Leroy Sané, who is suspended for three international matches after being sent off against the ÖFB team. His club colleague Thomas Müller, on the other hand, is still part of the team that will play against France (March 23 in Lyon) and the Netherlands (March 26 in Frankfurt) for the first time in the new European Championship jerseys presented on Thursday - one in classic white, the other in bright pink.

Nagelsmann will assemble his squad in Frankfurt on Monday and prepare for the first international matches in 2024. Alongside Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland are Germany's other group opponents at the European Championship on home soil from June 14 to July 14.
