New ISW analysis:
Russian troops could make a breakthrough
The Ukrainian troops are lucky that Russian forces are not currently attacking more intensively in some areas - at least according to a recent analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in Washington. Some sections of the front are particularly poorly equipped.
According to the analysis, the Ukrainian troops currently have to prioritize their resources. This means that they have to use the little material they have as efficiently as possible in order to prevent the permanent Russian advances. "Ukrainian prioritization of the sectors most threatened by intensive Russian offensives could create vulnerabilities elsewhere that Russian forces could exploit for sudden and surprise advances," ISW writes.
"Will not be able to hold out for long"
According to a "Spiegel" report, this affects areas such as Kharkiv and Wuhledar, which are currently overshadowed by other theaters of war. The Ukrainian armed forces there lack personnel, weapons and ammunition. The position can only be maintained in part because Russian forces are not "attacking with full force." In other words, in the event of a major offensive, Ukrainian soldiers would probably not be able to put up much resistance.
The current front line is probably not stable.
Analyse des ISW
"The current front line is probably not stable. Timely Western resources for Ukrainian troops are essential to prevent Russia from exploiting an opportunity for a breakthrough in a vulnerable sector of the frontline," the analysis states.
New weapons packages
Supporters of Ukraine have recently spent months negotiating for further aid. On Wednesday evening, the EU decided to increase the aid fund by five billion euros to provide weapons, ammunition and other goods. The largest supporter - the US government - also announced another aid package with military equipment.
