"I was lucky"
Breast cancer: Olivia Munn had a double mastectomy
"I've been lucky!" Olivia Munn has now shocked her 2.9 million fans on Instagram with the revelation that she has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer - and that she had to have both breasts removed.
The actor ("X-Man: Apocalypse") revealed that neither she nor her sister have the so-called cancer gene BRCA and that her mammogram in March 2023 was negative.
"Saved her life"
Nevertheless, her gynaecologist Dr. Thais Alibadi ("my guardian angel") requested a risk analysis and, according to Munn, "saved her life". This showed that there was a high probability of 37 percent that she would develop breast cancer in the course of her life.
Munn: "Dr. Alibadi then ordered an MRI, an ultrasound and finally a biopsy. These found the particularly aggressive, fast-growing luminal B tumors in my breast." Fortunately for her, they were discovered early and the chance of recovery was very high.
Double mastectomy
Just one month later, Munn was in surgery and underwent a double mastectomy at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills. In the last ten months, she has had four more operations.
The 43-year-old, who has a three-year-old son with stand-up comedian John Mulaney, is grateful for the support of her partner: "He has spent nights researching every possible surgical method and the side effects of every drug I have to take. And when I woke up from my surgeries, the first thing I saw was my little son Malcolm's face. John always put a framed photo on my bedside table in the recovery room."
