Rapids' Leo Querfeld:
“Pressure is there – we should play more freely”
On Friday, Rapid open the championship group against LASK in Hütteldorf. Grün-Weiß is still decimated, especially in offense. But ÖFB team player Leo Querfeld, the set defender, is not complaining: "We have come closer together as a team." He remains positive even after the derby quake...
A lot of things are currently breaking over Rapid due to the derby aftershock: Suspensions, penalties, team boss scolding including an ÖFB ban for the "singers", points deduction (next season), lots of discussions...
"The situation is not easy, but it brings us closer together," says Leopold Querfeld. On Sunday in the 1:1 in Klagenfurt, he even became the youngest captain in Rapid history. Of course, this was due to the suspensions of Burgstaller, Hofmann and Grüll. "Still a great honor for me," nods the 20-year-old proudly. "But that's not why I've defined my role differently. I always want to take on responsibility. Other players can do that now too."
Typical Querfeld, he also sees everything as an opportunity, i.e. a positive one. "We've come closer together as a team. We haven't been able to keep the topic out of the dressing room completely, but we players are concentrating on our sporting goals."
A first hurdle was overcome by making it into the top 6. "Now we have a cool starting position," says the defensive boss. For him, tomorrow's start to the championship group against LASK is another "great opportunity" - what else? - is: "We're only one point behind. LASK haven't performed that well recently either. There is always pressure. But we should be able to play a little more freely." Despite the suspensions of the two attacking weapons Burgstaller and Grüll.

Third place is the target - so Friday's clash in Hütteldorf will point the way forward. And the suspended players are also playing their part: "They are putting themselves at the service of the team, we need them to be able to train at the highest level," says Querfeld. "I think a lot of each individual as a person. I know that they regret their mistake."
However, at least Hofmann and Kongolo would again be alternatives alongside Querfeld in the center of defense on Friday.
