Dreaded Marseille drug lord arrested
A drug boss from Marseille who has been wanted for months was arrested in Morocco on Sunday. He is believed to be the alleged leader of one of the rival gangs.
"Thanks to our cooperation with the Moroccan authorities, whom I thank, drug banditry has been dealt a serious blow today," announced France's Interior Minister Gérald.
Important player in the Marseille drug war
The man had been wanted by Interpol for months and is considered a key player in the Marseille drug war. The 33-year-old is facing ten years in prison for money laundering, importing and trafficking narcotics and membership of a criminal gang, among other things.
France: Drug wars, random victims
Drug gangs dominate entire neighborhoods in France's second-largest city, and there are regular deadly settlements (see video above). Random victims are not uncommon.
Last year, 49 people died in Marseille in drug-related clashes, significantly more than in previous years.
