Heikki Kovalainen has announced that he will have to undergo open heart surgery. Although the former Formula 1 driver is not currently suffering from any symptoms, he is listening to the advice of his doctors.

An aortic aneurysm was discovered during a routine examination, explains the Finn. He now works as a rally driver and wanted to compete in the Japanese rally championship this year. That will now come to nothing for the time being.

"I was told that I would not be able to take part in the rallies because the risk of the artery rupturing is too great," says Kovalainen. However, he is not suffering from any symptoms and feels fine. Nevertheless, he is listening to his doctors' advice.

In Formula 1 from 2007 to 2013
"Open-heart surgery is our preferred solution at the moment and we are preparing everything for it," said the 42-year-old. Despite the risky procedure, his thoughts are already on the next races: "We hope to be able to carry out the operation quickly so that I can start my rehabilitation soon."

Without an operation, there is a risk of the artery rupturing and causing life-threatening internal bleeding. Kovalainen raced for Renault and McLaren, among others, in Formula 1 between 2007 and 2013. His only triumph came in Hungary in 2008.
