Speeding through Vienna’s Gürtel at 114 km/h

On Monday night, a speeding driver (28) was caught by the police on the Hernalser Gürtel in Vienna at a whopping 114 km/h. Not only was his driver's license confiscated, but also his car. Since March 1, speeding drivers have also had their cars confiscated. There have also been provisional confiscations in other federal states.

The speeding driver with a relevant criminal record was speeding at more than 60 km/h minus the measurement tolerance at around 10.30 p.m. near the AKH and had to surrender his VW. He was reported to the police.

Dangerous driving style
During his dangerous speeding, the 28-year-old was also following another car too closely and was constantly changing lanes. He had also endangered an emergency entrance.

The VW Scirocco was towed away by the MA48. A decision will be made in the next 14 days as to whether the speeding driver will get his car back or not.

Stricter rules for people with a criminal record
In principle, the vehicle will be confiscated if the speed limit exceeds 80 km/h in the local area and 90 km/h out of town. However, this does not apply to repeat offenders. Here, confiscation by the officers already applies at more than 60 km/h in the city.

"The first case in Vienna shows why it is important and right that the car is confiscated in the event of extremely excessive speed," said Transport and Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) on X (formerly Twitter) in response to the official action.
