“Ukrainian refugees live in a state of emergency”
SOS Children's Villages has been supporting children and families with emergency aid projects in Ukraine since the start of the war. This includes in the west of the country, where many internally displaced persons have found refuge. In the krone.tv interview, Birgit Schatz & Christine Weilhartner talk to Jürgen Winterleitner about the current situation of Ukrainian children and families and about aid offers for refugees in Austria.
Christine Weilhartner: "The families are living in a state of emergency, partly because some of them have left everything behind. We have spoken to many foster parents, mothers and displaced families who have fled with nothing but a small rucksack and now have to start from scratch in western Ukraine." Her words paint a picture of desperation, but also of energetic help.
Birgit Schatz talks about the Ukrainian situation in Austria, where SOS Children's Villages is helping refugee children and families to start a new life: "More resources are needed to learn the Austrian language and integrate the children into the local school system. The challenges are great, but not insurmountable".
Their joint message is clear: despite the dramatic war, SOS Children's Villages shines as a light of hope and support.
