From sex to Brexit: a couple dissects their marriage
Can the (near) failure of a marriage be entertaining? It can! Linz's Theater Phönix proves it with the Austrian premiere of "Keiner hat gesagt, dass du ausziehen sollst", a play by British cult author Nick Hornby. A lively evening of theater with depth!
Louise has cheated and Tom has moved out. Now they are going to couples' therapy - after all, they have two children together and don't want to give up their marriage without a fight.
Therapy in the bar
The viewer learns what is discussed with the therapist in passing. This is because the doctor and the unemployed music journalist - a familiar constellation from Nick Hornby's novels - meet in a bar before the sessions. Over wine and beer, they dissect their partnership, from sex to Brexit. And at least when it comes to gossiping about others, the couple agree.
Director Susanne Draxler dynamically stages the scenes of a marriage with all its natural illogicality, accompanied by music in the style of pop writer Hornby. She never touches on the tabloid, but always remains entertaining with depth. In the bar suggested by the stage set, pink shoes (set by Elisabeth Gressel) are enough to express a current state of mind.
The doctor and the chaotic man
Karina Pele and Martin Brunnemann realize the dynamics perfectly. She, at first glance the well-organized doctor, is full of contradictions. He, the lovable slob whose love has been buried under unacknowledged self-doubt.
With momentum in their own relationship
A charming couple that you have to love despite their flaws. A perfect evening of theater that entertains, delights and perhaps even makes one or two of us reflect on our own entrenched everyday relationships. Long, well-deserved applause for the premiere!
