In game one after the derby scandal, Rapid suffered a setback in the battle for a place in the Champions League. The team from Hütteldorf only managed a 1-1 draw at home against bottom-placed Austria Lustenau on Sunday, with Marco Grüll (78th penalty) and Ben Bobzien (50th) scoring the goals. Terence Kongolo (33) for Rapid and Pius Grabher (72) for Lustenau were sent off in what was at times a highly emotional match.

Ahead of the final round, Grün-Weiß are now two points ahead of Vienna Austria in sixth place. At the end of the basic round, they will face fourth-placed Austria Klagenfurt in a week's time, who have also not yet qualified for the top play-off.

A week after the outbursts of some Rapid players during the celebrations following the victory over Austria, captain Guido Burgstaller issued an apology via the video wall. The turbulence of the past few days obviously left its mark: Rapid had significantly more possession, but rarely or never posed a threat. The diciest moment in the first half was an attack in the second minute, when Christoph Lang appeared alone in front of the Lustenau goal, but was unable to finish properly.

Kongolo sent off for the third time in the seventh game
The visitors opened the scoring with a long-range shot from Lukas Fridrikas that was parried by Niklas Hedl (27') and were soon outnumbered. Bobzien was brought down after a tackle with Kongolo, who had already been cautioned, and referee Markus Hameter showed the central defender a yellow card. It was Kongolo's third yellow card in his seventh league match of the season.

Furious protests from Rapid followed and assistant coach Thomas Kraus was shown the red card. There was little change to the character of the game for the time being, with the 18,700 spectators seeing mostly unimaginative ball passing from the home side.

Immediately after the restart, Rapid looked more determined. Burgstaller headed over from a good position after a corner (48'), Matthias Seidl tested Lustenau goalkeeper Domenik Schierl (50'). A few seconds later, Bobzien appeared in the opponent's penalty area after a long shot from Schierl, Neraysho Kasanwirjo merely provided cover and Bobzien scored into the far corner.

Equalizer through penalty
After that, Lustenau put their foot down, the Rapid team fought fiercely for the equalizer and were finally rewarded. After a corner, Grabher fended off a Seidl shot on the goal line with his arm and was shown red, Grüll converted the penalty. Rapid pressed for the win in the final period - but the 2:1 that would have secured them a place in the Champions Group was no longer possible, partly because Burgstaller headed against the bar in the 87th minute and Seidl's follow-up shot was sensationally defused by Schierl.
