A feverish search is underway in Vietnam for almost 100 drug addicts who have all escaped from a rehab clinic. Following a "dispute" on Saturday evening, a total of 191 patients "escaped" from the facility in the city of Soc Trang in the south of the country.
94 inmates have already been recaptured. The search for the remaining escapees continues.
Several guards injured during breakout
According to reports, the inmates broke down the doors of their dormitory, ran out of the main entrance to the building and then jumped over a fence. Some are also said to have escaped through a hole in a wall. Several guards were injured during the escape.
Forced therapy for drug addiction
Communist Vietnam forces drug addicts who do not undergo voluntary treatment to undergo withdrawal. More than 30,000 people currently have to undergo compulsory treatment in state facilities. Some patients have to stay in the clinic for up to two years.
The detox clinic in Soc Trang is heavily overcrowded. The more than 460 drug addicts, most of whom are men, are guarded by just 60 guards.
