On the site of a mine
Several people missing after landslide in Turkey
In Turkey, several people are missing after a landslide on the site of a gold mine. There is currently no contact with nine workers, said Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya on Tuesday. 400 people are working to find the workers.
The landslide occurred at around 2.30 p.m. local time on Tuesday in a mine in Erzincan in eastern Turkey. Images from the TRT channel showed large masses of earth tumbling down a slope. There have already been several serious mining accidents in Turkey in recent years, partly due to inadequate safety precautions.
Dead in heavy rainfall
Meanwhile, the vacation resort of Antalya was hit by heavy rainfall (see video above). A 47-year-old man was found dead in his car. According to the Anadolu news agency, he was stuck in his car in a flooded underpass. Footage showed flooded stores and streets as well as cars under water.
Here you can see footage from Antalya.
More than 2,000 rescue workers were deployed and around half as many residents were brought to safety. In the Kepez district, it is said to have rained as much in the past twelve hours as it normally does in three months. Kindergartens and schools were closed for a day. The Turkish weather authority is also expecting heavy rain and an approaching storm on Wednesday.
