2 days after landslide
Girl and baby rescued from under rubble
More than 48 hours after a landslide in the Philippines, a baby and a toddler have been rescued. Rescuers had dug through the rubble in the city of Maco with their hands and found the two, said a provincial disaster officer.
"It is a great miracle that they were rescued after more than 48 hours." On Tuesday evening, a landslide buried several houses and three buses carrying miners, among others, near a gold mine in Maco.
15 dead, 100 missing
15 people were killed and 31 others were injured. According to the local authorities, more than 100 people are still missing. This figure is based on reports from local residents who are searching for family members. Maco is located almost 1000 kilometers southeast of the capital Manila.
The landslide was preceded by heavy rainfall caused by the north-east monsoon and a low-pressure system. Floods and landslides have been occurring since the end of January. Almost 400,000 people had to leave their homes.
