Almost hit by rock avalanche: Farm evacuated

A farm in East Tyrol had to be evacuated after several rockfalls. And there is still no all-clear: the mountain ridge is still moving. The future of the farm is uncertain. A regional geologist explains the reasons for landslides and co.

It is an idyllic place, a place to go on vacation. We are talking about the Obergraferhof in Innervillgraten near East Tyrol. But for days now, the unspoilt area, which is surrounded by massive and rocky mountains, has been in a state of emergency. "It all started on January 23rd. During the day, the first stones came loose from the mountain and fell into the stream behind our farm," explains farmer Albrecht Ortner, who runs a farm there with his mother Elisabeth (86) and offers farm vacations.
