City of Vienna warns of fake letters in its name
If you receive a letter from the City of Vienna, you should currently exercise caution: According to the city council, letters are circulating that claim to come from city departments or authorities and request the disclosure of sensitive and personal registration data.
According to the request in the fraudulent letters, the data should be entered in an internet form. For this purpose, a QR code should be scanned or an internet link followed.
The city warns against the fake letters:
Threat of deletion from the register of residents
Failure to do so results in a threat to delete the data from the Central Register of Residents. This is where the fraud begins, as it involves the unlawful acquisition of personal data from those affected. According to the City of Vienna, the letter looks authentic and contains - illegally used - real logos of the City of Vienna and actually existing addresses and telephone numbers.
Fraud attempt already reported
However, these letters do not come from a department of the city or an authority. The link provided in the letter should not be followed and under no circumstances should registration data be entered in the web form. According to the City of Vienna, registrations in the Central Register of Residents can only be made in person at a city registration office or online via a federal application. The attempted fraud has already been reported to the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office.
