Helicopter crash: Chile’s ex-President Pinera dead
Former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera died in a helicopter accident on Tuesday. The accident occurred in the popular vacation resort of Lago Ranco, 920 kilometers south of the capital Santiago de Chile.
The 74-year-old was piloting the helicopter himself. He lost control near the shore of the lake of the same name, Lago Ranco, and crashed into the water.
Three people survived the accident
According to the Ministry of the Interior, there were three other people on board in addition to Piñera, who were able to reach the shore under their own power after the crash and survived. Emergency services recovered the ex-president's body from the water.
"Chile has lost its best president"
"It is with great regret that we announce the death of the former President of the Republic of Chile", it said in an official statement. President Gabriel Boric had declared national mourning and ordered a state funeral, said Interior Minister Carolina Tohá. Former Mexican President Felipe Calderón said: "Chile has lost one of its best presidents."
Piñera held the office of president between 2010 and 2014 and between 2018 and 2022. He was 74 years old.
