"Damaging to the party"
Even though party leader Andreas Babler only recently made it clear that he currently sees no reason to expel Alfred Gusenbauer from the ranks of the Social Democrats due to his involvement in the Signa empire of real estate juggler René Benko, the federal party now has to deal with an expulsion motion. This was reportedly submitted against the former chairman and chancellor by Section 8 in Vienna-Alsergrund.
This accuses Gusenbauer, who is known to continue to act as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the insolvent Signa Prime and Signa Development, of "party-damaging behavior".
It would not be easy to force an expulsion from the party. As this is probably not a "particularly urgent" case, the responsibility lies with a court of arbitration, which has to carry out its own investigations. The decision can be appealed. In the case of a federal arbitration court, the federal party conference would then be the responsible body.
Burgenland comrades also demand expulsion
SPÖ leader Babler has so far shown little interest in expelling Gusenbauer, nor have other grandees such as Carinthian governor Peter Kaiser. Only the Burgenland regional organization has openly called for this.
Section 8, which has repeatedly criticized the federal party in the past, based its motion on Gusenbauer's role as Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Signa, among other things, and on his involvement with a Russian organization that is said to be close to Vladimir Putin.
