Greta Thunberg on trial after climate protest
A trial against Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and four fellow campaigners began in London on Thursday. The prosecution accuses them of disturbing public order after they protested against a meeting of energy managers three months ago. If convicted, she faces a fine.
The 21-year-old climate activist was temporarily arrested. At a court hearing in November, she pleaded not guilty.
At the start of the trial, the defendants gave their names and dates of birth. They had also pleaded not guilty at a hearing in November.
Thunberg and the other protesters - two members each of the Greenpeace and Fossil Free London organizations - are said to have refused to allow access to the conference hotel.
An official had issued a final warning, but Thunberg had not complied with the request to leave, according to public prosecutor Luke Staton. She was then arrested.
People had not been able to get in or out of the hotel. The hotel operators had cordoned off the building with fences and deployed their own security staff because of the protest.
"Climate protest is not a crime"
Several environmental activists demonstrated outside Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday. "Climate protest is not a crime," read one placard. During the protest in October, 26 people were arrested - while the "real climate criminals" dined in a luxury hotel, according to Fossil Free London.
