After a smoke break: passenger jumped onto a moving train

A Carinthian man (50) missed getting back on his train in Styria on Wednesday because of a smoke break. Fearing for his luggage left on the train, he simply clung to the approaching Railjet.

The incident occurred at around 2.30 p.m. after the Railjet on the route from Vienna to Villach had stopped at Bruck an der Mur station as scheduled. The 50-year-old took this opportunity to briefly leave the train and smoke a cigarette, the police reported on Thursday.

However, when the doors of the Railjet closed, the man tried in vain to open them again by pressing a button. After the train slowly began to move, he panicked and jumped onto a metal cover between the carriages.

Witnesses spotted the "passenger" and informed the station staff. After a short journey, the alerted train driver stopped at Niklasdorf station, where the Carinthian was able to get onto the platform unharmed

He will be reported to the police and will be charged for the unscheduled stopover. According to the police, the man regretted his short-sighted action as he was afraid for his luggage.
