Pumped storage power plant plans cause outrage

The new government program is considering a project on the Geschriebenstein. The Blue Party is sharply critical and identifies "climate communism".

It is just one sentence in the red-green government program that is now causing outrage among the FPÖ: In order to drive forward the implementation of potential renewable energy sources, the construction of a pumped-storage power plant at Geschriebenstein is to be evaluated, it says - as reported - on page 46 of the "Future Plan 2030".

The Freedom Party reacted indignantly to the plan. District party chairman Markus Wiesler, energy spokesman Sandro Waldmann and federal councillor Thomas Karacsony have all voiced their criticism.

Nature park at risk
"The planned project is not only geologically unreasonable, but would also have a serious impact on the environment. The nature park, which covers an area of around 35,500 hectares and straddles the border between Austria and Hungary, is home to many rare animal and plant species and must not be endangered by industrial projects such as pumped-storage power plants," the Blue Party is unusually green.

The project would also contradict the Geschriebenstein-Írottkõ Nature Park Action Plan 2030, which provides for the protection and sustainable development of the region. All three elected representatives are now calling on the provincial government to abandon the plans.
