Viennese wrong-way driver causes accident on the A1 in Lower Austria

A Viennese man (29) caused chaos as a wrong-way driver on the Westautobahn (A1) near Neulengbach on Saturday. When the police wanted to check a car without license plates in a breakdown bay, the man climbed from the back seat into the driver's seat and reversed the car. In doing so, he collided with another car, injuring three people.

On Saturday, a 29-year-old man from Vienna caused an accident on the Westautobahn (A1) in the direction of Linz near Neulengbach, injuring three people. The man, whose unregistered car had been noticed in a breakdown bay without a license plate, reversed during a police check and crashed into the vehicle of a 45-year-old man from Burgenland. The driver and two passengers, a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old, suffered minor injuries.

Wrong-way driver was under the influence of drugs
After the accident, the Viennese fled on foot via the Altlengbach highway exit, but was arrested after a short manhunt. An investigation revealed that he was under the influence of drugs. The 29-year-old will be reported to the St. Pölten public prosecutor's office and the district administrative authority, according to the Lower Austrian police.
