Accident on expressway claims one victim

Emergency services had to respond to a serious traffic accident on the expressway between St. Veit and Klagenfurt on Friday afternoon. A 35-year-old man suffered fatal injuries in the accident.

A fatal traffic accident occurred on the Klagenfurt expressway on Friday afternoon. A 35-year-old man from the district of St. Veit was driving his car towards Vienna, overtook a 55-year-old flatbed truck and skidded.

Car crashed head-on into truck
On the slightly snow-covered road, the man skidded into the oncoming lane and crashed head-on into an oncoming articulated truck. "Due to the force of the impact, the car was thrown back onto the Vienna-bound carriageway, collided with the flatbed truck and then came to a halt in the middle of the two lanes of the expressway, badly damaged," reported the police. 

The 56-year-old truck driver slid with his vehicle into the slightly sloping road shoulder. He and the 55-year-old car driver were taken to Klagenfurt Hospital with minor injuries. For the 35-year-old driver, all help came too late. Despite a rapid rescue chain, he died of his serious injuries at the scene of the accident. 

Accident caused a traffic jam
Immediately after the accident, the expressway between Klagenfurt and St. Veit was closed. Due to the severity of the accident and the extensive recovery measures for the truck, the Klagenfurt expressway was closed to all traffic from 12:35 to 17:09. In addition to the police, several fire departments from the surrounding area were also deployed.
