Turmoil at the campsite

The Klagenfurt public utility company has terminated the lease. The tenant had previously been promised a renovation.

Campsite operator Thomas Freund, who has been running the site next to the Klagenfurt lido for 15 years and has recorded around one million overnight stays since then, is annoyed. "The municipal utilities have terminated the lease."

The problems were triggered by the flooding in the previous year. "There was sewage water in the lido and the camping house was also affected. The municipal utilities then promised to replace everything from the fall," says Freund.

But nothing happened. "This year we lived in containers. Stadtwerke asked me to stop earlier because the house was to be demolished for the renovation." But on September 9, he was informed that nothing would happen this year either.

The municipal utilities terminated the lease. They did nothing for two years after the faecal water damage.

"As a leaseholder, I was never privy to the conversion plans. Now came the termination. Apparently the municipal utilities want to get a higher rent. But according to the contract, I can stay a year longer." However, online bookings will no longer be possible due to the uncertain future.

"There is a new tender because we are making the campsite fit for the future. A lot of money is being invested. That's why we had to give notice," says Gerald Florian from Stadtwerke.
