Alarm in Vienna-Ottakring: eyewitnesses reported a courageous red fox that appeared directly in front of a supermarket. Unimpressed by the passers-by, it continued on its way through the streets - even the traffic didn't seem to bother the animal.

They run along the sidewalk, walk between parked cars, squeeze through garden fences, jump onto the garden gate - and all this in the big city. Foxes have long since conquered the urban habitat: Vienna in particular, with its numerous parks and surrounding forests, is home to a particularly rich variety of species.

On Wednesday morning, a fox was walking along Ottakringer Straße near the Ottakring subway station. Neither passers-by nor passing cars seemed to disturb the wild animal. Astonished eyewitnesses stopped and watched as the fox crept along the sidewalk past a supermarket and then disappeared around the corner into a side street.

No danger to humans
Foxes pose no danger to humans, as rabies has been eradicated since 2008. Foxes are now frequently seen in populated areas, and some even live in housing estates.

However, it was surprising that a fox was spotted outside a supermarket in the morning, as foxes are normally active at dusk and at night. The magistrate repeatedly points out that wild animals should never be fed.
