World number two Carlos Alcaraz suffered a surprising defeat in the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 hard-court tournament in Shanghai. The Spaniard lost 6:7(5),5:7 to the Czech Tomas Machac on Thursday and thus missed out on a semi-final duel with top seed Jannik Sinner. 

The Italian beat Russia's Daniil Medvedev 6:1,6:4 to reach the last four.

Machac, the world number 33, ended Alcaraz's twelve-match winning streak with his success. The 23-year-old will now face Sinner in the semifinals.

Pegula fails against Wang Xinyu 
US player Jessica Pegula's elimination from the women's tournament in Wuhan, China, also came as a surprise. The US Open finalist, seeded number two, was beaten 3:6, 5:7 by China's Wang Xinyu in the round of 16 of the WTA 1000 event.
