Carers found dead senior citizen in smoke-filled house

Terrible death drama Wednesday morning in the municipality of Oberperfuss in the Tyrolean district of Innsbruck-Land. A fire had broken out in the house of an 80-year-old in need of care. When carers went to check on him, thick smoke billowed out of the building. The man could only be rescued dead.

According to the police, at around 8.15 a.m., employees from the social and health services wanted to enter the house in Oberperfuss to check on the 80-year-old resident in need of care. "As soon as the front door was opened, thick smoke came out of the house, whereupon an emergency call was immediately made," said the investigators.

An autopsy was ordered. There are currently no indications of any outside involvement.

The Oberperfuss volunteer fire department was quickly on the scene and was able to extinguish the fire. However, all help came too late for the pensioner. "The 80-year-old could only be recovered dead," said the police.

According to the current state of the investigation, "it can be assumed that it was an accident when the tiled stove was lit". An autopsy has been ordered. There are currently no indications of any third-party fault.
