3 resignations submitted: Kiev faces government reshuffle

War-torn Ukraine is facing a government reshuffle after three ministers handed in their resignations. Their applications will be examined in the next parliamentary session, as parliamentary speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk wrote on Facebook. 

The ministers in question are Olexander Kamyshin, who is responsible for the defense industry, Denys Malyuska (justice) and Ruslan Strilets (environment).

Further changes announced
Vitaly Koval, the head of the State Property Fund responsible for privatization, also wants to leave office. The parliamentary group leader of the presidential party "Servants of the People", David Arachamija, announced further changes to the cabinet. According to him, there will be new appointments to more than half of all ministries. The final list will be announced on Wednesday at the parliamentary group meeting.

Electricity deficit
It had previously become known that the head of the electricity grid operator Ukrenerho, Volodymyr Kudrytsky, had been dismissed by the state-owned company's board of directors. Kudryzkyj had headed Ukrenerho since 2020, but was recently blamed for inadequate protective measures for the country's substations against Russian drone and missile attacks. Since a massive Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure at the beginning of last week, Ukraine has again experienced hours of unplanned power outages due to the electricity shortage.

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a government overhaul back in July. Five ministries are already headed by caretaker ministers. Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for over two and a half years. The government under Shmyhal has been in office since March 2020.
