Missing for days

Corpse discovered in the Danube

On Sunday, the emergency services in Vienna-Brigittenau were called out after a corpse was discovered in the Danube. It was a missing person who had been missing for days.

According to the police, a passer-by discovered a body in the area of the Georg-Danzer-Steg in Vienna-Brigittenau at around 11.30 am. The water police, Vienna Water Rescue and the Vienna Fire Brigade were immediately deployed. A large-scale operation was launched. However, all help came too late and only death could be determined.

Missing for days
According to the police, it was a swimmer (32) who had been missing for several days. He jumped off a bridge into the Danube last week. Several days of searching for the man - supported by fire department divers, drones and the police helicopter - were unsuccessful until he was found today.

According to witnesses, the 32-year-old had jumped into the water under the influence of alcohol and with suspected suicidal intent.

Investigation underway
The operation in the Handelskai area lasted several hours, explained a spokesperson for the regional police headquarters. A rescue helicopter was also on the scene. The investigation is in full swing.
