Police officers injured at carnival festival in London

According to British media, around one million visitors were expected over the extended weekend. Among them was a criminal wanted for attempted murder, who was discovered in the crowd and arrested.(Bild: AFP)

Numerous acts of violence and arrests were made on the fringes of the large carnival celebration in the London district of Notting Hill. Despite the heavy police presence with thousands of officers, the police were unable to completely prevent stabbings and other crimes. 

Within two days, 35 police officers were injured and the Metropolitan Police arrested 230 people for various offenses, it was announced that night.

Two victims of violence were in mortal danger after knife attacks, including a 32-year-old mother who had been at the festival with her toddler on Sunday - Family Day. 

The Notting Hill Carnival was founded by immigrants from the Caribbean, has been celebrated for more than 50 years and is considered one of the largest street festivals in Europe.(Bild: AFP)

Executive appalled by criminal excesses 
In view of the numerous acts of violence, sexual offenses and drug offenses, the police were appalled by the criminal excesses during the festivities. "We are tired of saying the same thing every year. We are tired of telling families that their loved ones are seriously injured or worse. We are tired of seeing criminal acts at Carnival," said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan of the Metropolitan Police.

"Carnival is a community celebration and the vast majority of people come to party, dance, enjoy the music and share in a fantastic experience."
