FC Barcelona let Ilkay Gündogan leave on a free transfer (!) after just one year. To the astonishment of many - even former Real Madrid star Toni Kroos can't believe it.

"Wow", wrote Kroos, who ended his career after the European Championships in the summer, under a post by Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The latter had reported that Barcelona were letting Gündogan go and were not demanding a transfer fee for the 33-year-old. Kroos is stunned by the Catalans' decision and adds three emojis of the monkey covering his eyes to his short message.

For many soccer fans, it is incomprehensible that the Spanish top club is letting a top performer like Gündogan leave on a free transfer. What's more, Barcelona's financial situation remains tight. The club could have really used the money from Gündogan's transfer.

Spectacular return?
Is a spectacular return in the offing? Gündogan is said to have already been in contact with his former club Manchester City in recent days. Pep Guardiola has already made it clear that he would welcome the midfielder with open arms.
