Bullfighting banned in Colombia in future

Bullfighting will be banned in Colombia in future. President Gustavo Petro has signed a law to this effect. "We cannot tell the world that killing living and sentient beings for entertainment is culture," he said.

If nature is destroyed, humanity is at an end. In future, the bullring will be a stage for "culture, sport, life and not death". The country now has three years to transform the bullrings into cultural and artistic centers. The workers who earn their living from bullfighting must be retrained, said Petro.

The law "No más olé" (No more olé) was already passed at the end of May. Bullfighting has been a tradition in the South American country since Spanish colonial times. Animal rights activists have repeatedly protested against this in recent years. Bullfighting is still legal in Spain, Portugal, France, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
