Bitter tears after top chance in stoppage time

Complete emptiness for Austria's European Championship heroes! Ralf Rangnick's squad missed out on a reward for their great performance in the group stage on Tuesday evening, losing 2-1 to Turkey in the round of 16. It was a particularly bitter end to the evening for Christoph Baumgartner, who was denied by goalkeeper Mert Günok in stoppage time when he had a top chance.

In the final minute of the game, the Leipzig striker had managed to get a header back at his "workplace", directing the ball almost perfectly towards the Turkish side's box.

However, an outstanding Günok reacted with lightning speed, the Besiktaks keeper reflexively threw himself in the direction of the ball and booked Austria's ticket home.

The frustration in the red-white-red camp was correspondingly great, with Michael Gregortisch, Alexander Prass and co. in tears after the final whistle. "Definitely one of the saddest moments of my life," said Baumgartner, giving an insight into his emotional world.

For Austria, the "summer fairytale" ended after four games - four games in which every player gave their all in every match and showed that no opponent is unbeatable for Ralf Rangnick's national team.
