Big parade: city in the hands of folk culture

When tradition comes to the city, there is a big celebration: More than 60 associations - from marksmen to brass bands and women in gold hoods - marched in Salzburg's old town at the weekend. The last time there was a long break: no folk culture festival had taken place for 24 years.

The fortress marksmen opened Sunday morning with their volleys. Around 60 clubs then attended the festive mass in the cathedral.

A particularly solemn moment was the consecration of the new Gauverband flag of the Salzburg-Stadt Heimatvereinigungen. The flag, made by the company Fahnen Gärtner in Mittersill, represents all member associations with symbols such as a dancing couple, an accordion, a clef, a sock or a Krampus mask. Around a thousand participants then headed towards the festival grounds at the Stiegl brewery in Salzburg-Maxglan.

After a break of 24 years, a folk culture festival was held in the provincial capital for the first time again.
