Animal-loving pupils build new home for bats

Animal-loving pupils tried their hand at carpentry and created breeding boxes for flying animals. An important action in the name of species protection - bats are known to be endangered. 

In the warmer months of the year, bats wake up from their hibernation and look for a new roost where they can spend the summer and rest in broad daylight. They are sure to find what they are looking for in Baden. Animal-loving pupils from the Radetzkystraße elementary school have now built eight bat boxes to protect the flying acrobats. The nocturnal animals are considered endangered in Austria.

Many of the fluttering creatures often lose their roosts due to renovations and building work. The new boxes built by the primary school pupils are ideal for native species such as pug bats, noctule bats, whiskered bats, mosquito bats and pipistrelle bats.

Animal welfare campaign 
The first box was attached to an old pine tree in Weikersdorfer Park in May. The pupils had help from the professionals at Badener Stadtgärten. "Thank you very much for your commitment to protecting our bats! You can be proud to have created a new home for many endangered animals," said Mayor Stefan Szirucsek, thanking everyone involved.
