Man (51) dies during mountain tour in Styria

According to witnesses, the man had left the Reichensteinhütte on the Eisenerzer Reichenstein at 1 pm in the direction of the valley, but had not returned home. Shortly after 8 pm, the Alpine police and mountain rescue team began searching for the missing man.

Hiker discovered in a scree field
Around two hours later - at around 10.15 p.m. - a search party found the hiker around 170 meters below the actual path in a scree field. According to the police, all help came too late for the 51-year-old, who died at the scene of the accident.

Body brought back to the valley
Emergency services rescued the hiker and brought him down to the valley. How the accident occurred is under investigation. However, the Styrian Safety Directorate announced on Thursday morning that the accident was not the fault of a third party.
