Russia attempts breakthrough in Kharkiv region

According to the governor of the Kharkiv region in north-eastern Ukraine, Oleh Synehubov, Russian troops have attempted to break through the border with Ukraine. They had intensified their shelling of the city of Vovchansk, which is close to the border with Russia, he explained on Telegram.

According to Ukrainian sources, between 35,000 and 50,000 Russian soldiers and 400 tanks have gathered in the border region over the past few days. However, the attempted attacks were repelled and the Ukrainian armed forces "confidently held their positions and did not lose a single meter", the governor wrote.

Fighting "of varying intensity"
Russia does not have the means to advance on the eponymous city of Kharkiv, Synehubov continued. The actions of the Russian troops on the border were a "provocation". Kiev sent more soldiers to the area to reinforce the troops there. Meanwhile, the fighting continued "with varying intensity".

Kiev had previously announced that it had intercepted and destroyed ten Russian threats during the night. Moscow also fired two anti-aircraft guided missiles, the Ukrainian air force said on Telegram. What happened to the missiles initially remained unclear.

Ukraine shoots oil refinery on fire
According to a media report, an oil refinery in the Russian oblast of Kaluga caught fire following a Ukrainian drone attack. This was reported by the Russian state news agency RIA, citing insiders from the emergency services. Three containers with diesel fuel and one with heating oil were destroyed in the fire at the Pervyi Zavod refinery in Kaluga.

Ukraine has increasingly attacked energy facilities on Russian territory in recent months, targeting the fuel supply of Russian troops in particular.
