“Thiem? He’s really important for our sport”
Superstar Novak Djokovic spoke out on Wednesday about the apparently imminent end of Dominic Thiem's career. "Hopefully he can stay as long as he can because he's really important for our sport," said the Serb.
He had not heard anything about the rumors and therefore only wanted to talk about Thiem and his value to tennis, Djokovic said when asked about this on the sidelines of the tournament in Rome.
The 2020 US Open champion is "a great person, someone who has very good manners and good values. He always showed respect on the court and always took the time to say hello," said the 24-time Grand Slam winner. "I really like Dominic. We all know how hard it is to come back (after an injury, ed.)."
"Only he knows how long he will play"
Thiem brought spectacular shots, an "incredible one-handed backhand and forehand" and so much power and intensity to the court. "Hopefully he can stay as long as he can because he's really important for our sport. But he decides. Only he knows how long he will play."
