Choral event with 1500 singers in Salzburg
The "Long Night of Choirs" takes place on Wednesday at 19 venues in Salzburg's old town.
Visitors can experience the joy and energy of singing together in Salzburg today. At the tenth "Long Night of Choirs", 1500 singers will perform. The 68 choirs will perform their favorite pieces free of charge at 19 venues.
"Those who sing don't think about war"
"People who like to sing don't think about war and are not egotists. They sing and enjoy their community every week," says Dieter Schaffer, President of the Salzburg Choir Association. The former transport entrepreneur (79) had the idea for the event ten years ago.
With a little stubbornness, he got his way, grins the singer of the "Salzburger Männerquintett". His success proves him right. The "Long Night" has blossomed into Austria's biggest choral event. Six federal states are already following suit.
There will be around twelve hours of singing and listening today in the old town on the left. The midday and early afternoon belong to the youth: school choirs perform in the Great University Hall from 11 a.m. and then in the courtyard of the Old Residence. Starmania winner Anna Buchegger is the star guest at 5 pm in St. Peter's.
From 7.30 pm, choirs from all over the province will be singing at 19 venues. In St. Peter's, children will bring the festival to a close at 10.30 pm. The program booklets are available at the information stand there.
