Heavy thunderstorm
Subway and Praterstern flooded by heavy rain
A downpour late on Monday afternoon caused a number of floods in the Austrian capital: Praterstern, a subway station and the Millennium City were literally flooded according to initial reports.
Heavy rainfall caused havoc in Vienna on Monday. Around 30 liters per square meter fell on the Hohe Warte in Döbling, Ubimet meteorologist Michele Salmi told the "Krone" newspaper.
In Donaufeld, in the direction of Stammersdorf, it is likely to have been just under 26 liters. Weak gusts of wind - the wind peaks in the city reached a maximum of 60 km/h - saved damage, but there was still some flooding due to the heavy rainfall.
Rain in the Millennium City
A leak in the roof of the Millennium City shopping center apparently caused enormous amounts of water to flow into the shopping center. A "Krone" reader reporter filmed how the rain poured down (see below).
In the Dresdner Straße subway station, a staircase even had to be closed due to water ingress, as Wiener Linien confirmed in response to a Krone inquiry. However, the station could still be used and operations were not restricted.
The picture was similar at Praterstern. Several areas were also flooded by the downpour. A "Krone" editor also got a little wet - but captured the event in pictures for the readers!
