Scholz and Macron: “Secret” rendezvous in Paris

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was in Paris privately and met President Emmanuel Macron for dinner on Thursday. His two wives were also present. 

Scholz is said to have been on a short break in Paris with his wife Britta and met the Macron couple for a private dinner at the French president's favorite brasserie.

Chinese problems
The central topic of the conversation was the three-day state visit by China's head of state Xi Jinping to Paris, which begins on Saturday. Scholz had met Xi in Beijing just last month and spoke with Macron about this meeting. The two disagree on how to deal with China.

The German chancellor is cautious about the possible introduction of EU tariffs on subsidized Chinese electric vehicles, while Macron and Commission President von der Leyen are in favour. Von der Leyen will be present at a meeting between Macron and Xi Jinping. Other stops on Xi Jinping's trip to Europe include Serbia and Hungary.
