Three days after their 3-0 home win over WSG Tirol, Vienna's Austria failed to add to their tally. On Tuesday, Michael Wimmer's side conceded a 0:1 (0:0) defeat at the Tyroleans due to an unfortunate penalty in the final stages, meaning the league leaders' lead over the WAC shrank to three points with four rounds to go in the Bundesliga qualifying group. WSG, on the other hand, took a big step towards relegation.
Thanks to Denis Tomic's penalty, they are already ten points ahead of bottom club Lustenau, and a draw at home against the Vorarlberg side would be enough for the Tyroleans to secure their ticket to the top flight next season. Austria suffered their first defeat in the qualifying group and left the pitch as losers for the first time in eleven games against WSG.
After a five-minute stoppage due to a blocked safety path in the stands, the Viennese side started with a great chance, when Andreas Gruber was confused by the outrunning WSG goalkeeper Adam Stejskal and shot past the goal (6th). However, the home side survived the first period of Violet pressure on the rain-soaked pitch and worked their way into the game better after a quarter of an hour.
Tirol dangerous
The Tyroleans made several dangerous appearances in Austria's penalty area, but were initially unable to create any or any good shots. The defensive-minded WSG with their five-man backline benefited from the sluggishness of the Viennese attack in this phase and continued to make pinpricks, such as Bror Blume's low shot, which put Christian Früchtl under pressure for the first time (32'). Shortly afterwards, Aleksander Buksa headed wide of the goal (34'), and the Pole missed again minutes later (40').
At the start of the second half, Austrias Bayern loanee Fans Krätzig tested Stejskal from an acute angle (53'), and the game had little to offer after that. Violett made very little of their clear possession advantage, especially in comparison to their most recent duel, and WSG failed to make any pinpricks.
VAR decides
The game remained tense until the end. Austria were lucky not to concede an own goal after a misunderstanding between Früchtl and Hakim Guenouche at the end (81'), but a few scenes later they were really unlucky. David Gugganig headed at defender Marvin Martins' hand and, after studying the VAR, referee Alan Kijas awarded a penalty. Tomic confidently converted it to make the final score. In stoppage time, Guenouche was shown red after an emergency brake against Lukas Sulzbacher in the opponent's half (93').
