Renovation of the Tauernklinikum – Province invests
The province of Salzburg is investing around 51 million euros in the Tauernklinikum Mittersill: the hospital there is being expanded and modernized.
The province of Salzburg is investing 51 million euros in Mittersill alone in order to secure healthcare for around 90,000 Pinzgau residents - and many tourist guests as well - together with the second Tauernklinikum site in Zell am See. In total, a 63 million euro "healthcare package" is being brought to the region by the province of Salzburg.
The key points of the modernization at a glance:
- Around 51 million euros will be invested in Mittersill and the hospital there will be expanded and modernized. Among other things, there will be two operating theaters, a day clinic, 90 acute care beds, four aftercare beds, an outpatient area with radiology and a modern kitchen with cafeteria.
- The Mittersill hospital will offer basic inpatient care, followed by the health center, which will provide interdisciplinary services with general practitioners, specialists, a consultation center, midwife center, physiotherapy practice and OGK dental outpatient clinic.
- Helipad on the hospital roof for acute cases.
- Red Cross site with garages, wash box, recreation and sleeping areas.
Overview of the next steps:
- Preparations for the demolition work (Kaiser-Franz-Josef wing) should be completed by the beginning of May 2024.
- Safeguarding measures and demolition work are scheduled to begin in May 2024.
- At the beginning of June 2024, excavation pit securing (sheet piling), dewatering and excavation.
- From June 2024 to February 2025, work will continue on the construction of a shell.
- Completion of the building, including the planned relocation of the existing primary care center (PVZ), the new ÖGK dental clinic and the new surgery for physical medicine as well as a health and social counseling center, is planned for the 2nd quarter of 2026.
"Far beyond Mittersill"
The mayor of Mittersill, Thomas Ellmauer, emphasizes how important the commitment to the location is for the entire region. "The healthcare provision here doesn't just affect Mittersill, but extends all the way up to Krimml and Gerlos. Without the location in Mittersill, that would be even further away," says Ellmauer, who also points out the importance of the new helicopter landing pad.
However, it is planned that the state will cover one hundred percent of the financial losses in Zell am See and Mittersill in future. Until now, the municipalities, as hospital operators, had to cover 20 percent themselves. In return, the state will have a greater say. The legal details are currently being worked out.
