Unusual turnaround
Lower Austria: Escaped prisoner returned voluntarily
An unusual turn of events in the case of the prisoner (23) in Lower Austria who escaped on Tuesday: he voluntarily returned to Korneuburg prison on Thursday.
At around 9.45 pm, the 23-year-old handed himself in at the prison, police spokesman Raimund Schwaigerlehner announced on Friday. The inmate had been held as a released prisoner since September 2023. According to the ministry, the inmate had completed "a large number of prison relaxations associated with freedom" without incident.
Short remaining sentence still to be served
"Even in view of the short remaining sentence of only three months to be served, there was no reason to assume a risk of escape," it was emphasized. Prison guards immediately rushed after the prisoner and the officers were supported by the police.
However, the inmate was able to escape. It is still unclear where the man was after the escape; a manhunt was unsuccessful. There have been several cases of escaped prisoners in recent months.
Inmate from Stein prison still on the run
There is still no trace of Islam Y., who escaped on November 14, 2023 during an examination appointment at Krems University Hospital. The high-risk inmate was serving an eleven-year prison sentence in Stein prison for aggravated robbery, among other things.
