Alarming rise in measles cases in Lower Austria

Measles is currently on the rise. To prevent the highly contagious disease from spreading further, the state is once again sending the vaccination bus on its travels. A free jab is available there.

A comparison that sets alarm bells ringing: While there were only six cases of measles in Lower Austria in the entire previous year, this year there are already 149. "It is a highly infectious disease that can also be fatal," warns State Health Councillor Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig.

The state is going on the offensive to prevent further spread. "According to the World Health Agency, we need a vaccination coverage rate of 95%, but we only have 72%," emphasizes the SPÖ politician. After all, every case of measles could infect 100 unprotected people.

The vaccination bus tour

• Monday, April 22, from 8.30 a.m. in front of Zwettl town hall and from 1 p.m. in front of Waidhofen an der Thaya town hall
• Tuesday, April 23, from 8.30 a.m. in front of the BH Hollabrunn and from 1.30 p.m. in front of the BH Gänserndorf
• Wednesday, April 24, from 8.30 a.m. on the main square in Wiener Neustadt and from 1.30 p.m. in front of Schwechat town hall,
• Thursday, April 25, from 8.30 a.m. in front of the Johann-Pölz-Halle in Amstetten and from 1 p.m. in front of the Haus der Zukunft in Wieselburg
• Friday, April 26, from 8.30 a.m. in front of the Lilienfeld municipal office and from 1 p.m. in front of the Klangturm in St. Pölten

Vaccination directly on the bus
The Lower Austrian vaccination bus is starting its engine again. It starts on April 22nd from 8.30 am in Zwettl. Stops will be made in ten towns until April 26. "Vaccinations can be given from the age of nine months. Boosters are scheduled after three months," explains Medical Director Regina Klenk. The prick on the bus does not require an appointment and is free of charge. The vaccination status can also be checked. "You should bring your e-card and vaccination certificate with you," says Klenk.
