Ruang volcano erupts: 800 people evacuated
Hundreds of people have been evacuated in north-eastern Indonesia following a volcanic eruption. According to reports, there were no deaths or injuries.
According to the responsible authorities, Ruang in the province of North Sulawesi first erupted on Tuesday afternoon and then twice more on early Wednesday morning.
Around 800 inhabitants of the volcanic island of Ruang, which lies to the north of Sumatra, were evacuated. They were taken to the neighboring island of Tagulandang.
According to the authorities, the volcano spewed a column of ash two kilometers high during the first eruption. During the second eruption, it was 2.5 kilometers high.
Volcanologists raised the warning level for volcanic eruptions to the second-highest level on Tuesday following two earthquakes in recent weeks.
