Summer weather break
Red warning level: severe weather with hail is now raging here
As announced at the weekend, a cold front has put an end to the summer weather in Austria for the time being. On Monday afternoon, the first federal states were already on red alert: severe storms with rain, thunderstorms and hail were falling.
In the afternoon, it was already raining heavily in Salzburg, in the Zell am See and Sankt Johann im Pongau regions, but also in Lower Austria, in the Baden, Neukirchen and Wiener Neustadt areas.
Red warning level in four federal states
Hail also fell in Burgenland, especially in the Eisenstadt area, as well as in Liezen and Bruck-Mürzzuschlag in Styria.
Weather change at the beginning of the week
A cold front coming from the northwest was the cause of the marked change in the weather on Monday. This will cause temperatures to drop noticeably again from Tuesday.
Ternitz was surprised by hail early on Monday afternoon. A thunderstorm cell has also built up over Saalfelden. Hail was also reported in Neunkirchen. The thunderstorm then moved on towards Mattersburg. According to the Austrian Severe Weather Center, more than 10,000 lightning discharges were recorded - "remarkable for mid-April", according to a post on X.
Tuesday will be much colder
The sky is likely to remain cloudy on Tuesday and showers will continue to fall from time to time, with rain intensifying in the south and often persistent and sometimes heavy rain from Upper Carinthia to the industrial district. The highest temperatures will probably be in Tyrol and Vorarlberg with up to 13 degrees. In Styria, however, temperatures are only expected to reach 7 degrees on Tuesday.
